Aztecs Cricket Club was formed in 1986 by the Late Mr Jayesh Lalsodagar and Mr Yogesh Vinchi. They both wanted to play social cricket on Sundays. Hence, the club was formed and included amongst its initial members, a group of common friends, some of whom were able to play cricket with the support of other non playing members.
In 1993, Mr Irfan Cheema, despite being a top all-rounder and mainstay in the first team, took up the challenge by captaining and establishing our second team. Later that year the challenge was passed on to Mr Mukesh Desai and Mr Narinder Punj who both played their part in making the second team successful.
Our first team played competitive cricket including knockout tournaments such as Clive Lloyd Cup, Victoria Mutual Cup, Bertie Joel Cup, The Evening Standard Challenge Trophy and the National. Our first notable trophy won was the Clive Lloyd Plate in 1997 under the captaincy of Mr Adnan Khan Lodhi.
In 2001, Mr Baljinder Singh Kalyan has been named as the club chairman. He has provided fantastic leadership to drive the club forward ever since. During this time the club has gone through unprecedented success and expansion including over 90 playing members and six teams on match day.
In 2014 Aztecs joined Saturday League Cricket. This club was invited to join the Essex County Cricket League in Division 1 which was the middle division in this league. This invitation was mainly in recognition of the position, standing and strength of the club. This provided an opportunity to get promoted and play Premier League Cricket next season. Aztecs ended the season as runners up and being promoted to the premier division. The club has now expanded further and will field two teams on Saturdays.
These are indeed exciting times to be a member of Aztecs Cricket Club. If you liked the sound of this wonderful adventure, then please come and join this club to continue with us in this great journey.
